Hello, you lovely human being - who is worthy of safe spaces.
Welcome to my blog which is the digital safe space that I have created to engage with you more and partake in the much-needed conversation about all things mental health.
Growing up in Cape Town, South Africa as a woman of colour, mental health was not a topic of conversation within my social circles.
My insight into mental health was limited to knowing that it was something that was only relevant to the kids at school that would have sessions with the school social worker/counselor, but I did not know much more about it.
Growing up in South Africa, have you ever wondered what "mental health" actually refers to?
You are not alone. This was my experience growing up too.
As I got older, I would hear the term "mental health" sporadically in life orientation classes, but it wasn't until my final years of secondary schooling that I began my own research into this fascinating industry.
Mental health affects each and every one of us.
Mental health truly is an all-encompassing topic that affects every single one of us. Your parents have mental health. Your siblings have mental health. Your partner has mental health. You have mental health.
And I'm here to encourage you to pay attention to your own mental health and wellbeing.
Why it matters
Your mental health refers to your emotional, psychological and social well-being. It's how you exist as a person in this world - how you think, feel and act.
How well do you know yourself?
How do you respond to different situations and why do you do what you do?
By understanding yourself better, you can be better equipped to cope with stress, react in constructive ways and improve the quality of your relationships.
Through this blog, I will be writing about various topics pertaining to mental health and wellness with a particular focus on how you can get to know yourself better and journey through self-acceptance and self-love so that you can live a fulfilling life.
If you are looking for more support and guidance in this process, I do offer online counseling services, where I will accompany you on the journey of getting to know yourself better and understanding how you show up in your relationships.
Here's to creating a mentally wealthy generation and making mental health care more accessible in South Africa!
