What is therapy?Therapy is the process of providing a safe, non judgmental space for clients, where they can explore their behaviour, thoughts, memories and emotions as it comes into awareness in a professional and confidential relationship between the client and counsellor. A counsellor is there to provide a safe and supportive environment within which healing can take place. In all of the different phases in life that we navigate through as human beings, there is no shame in asking for support and seeking a listening ear from someone that will not judge your journey. It is my heart to create a safe environment for you to explore the nature of the situations and/or relationships that are challenging to you and to assist you in developing strategies that will allow you to create a life that is meaningful and liberating.

What is the difference between a Registered Counsellor and a Psychologist?Registered counsellors are trained in broad areas of mental health care, whereas psychologists have additional training and education on certain aspects of mental health. It is most common for a registered counsellor to focus on immediate and shorter-term intervention and support, whereas a psychologist typically focuses on more in-depth medium to long term psychotherapy. If I feel that you would benefit from a more in-depth support from a psychologist at any point during our time together, I will communicate this with you and offer you a referral to another skilled professional.

When do I need to see a counsellor?Everyone is brought to xounselling for various reasons, and it’s important to remember that reaching out is not a sign of weakness but a significant step toward the path of self-care.. If you are going through a big change, maybe moving houses or deciding on a career path, if you have lost a loved one, or if you are having difficulties at in your workplace and in social settings, you could benefit from counselling. If you’re having difficulty regulating your emotions and/or difficulty performing everyday tasks, or finding yourself not enjoying doing the things you would typically did, you could benefit from counselling. If you want to improve yourself and don’t know where to start, you could benefit from counselling. If you're in need of a safe space, where it's all about you, you might benefit from counselling.
-
What can I expect in my first session? The first (and sometimes second) session will be focused on gathering information so that I can get to know you and gain an understanding about your concerns in context. During this first session, we will mostly discuss your main reason for seeking counselling and I will ask you some questions related to your early experiences, medical, education, social and work history. We will work together to establish your hopes and goals for counselling and discuss how we can start navigating this process. Based on the feedback from this initial session, I will put together a carefully and uniquely crafted treatment plan to help you reach your goals for counselling.
-
How are long is each session? Each individual counseling session is between 50 and 60 minutes in duration. Group session and/or workshops are usually a little longer.
